Job Description

The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students, to apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role.
 
The Disability Service is currently looking to recruit Disability Service Ambassadors, to support new students over the autumn term of the 2024-25 academic year.
 

The role is open to students who are registered with the Disability Service, and who will be fully enrolled in the 2024-25 academic year. Applicants must have at least a year’s experience as a student at Manchester Met.

Key Tasks

  • To attend an online training session on Friday, 21st June 2024 from 2:30pm – 4:00pm (you will be paid to attend this).
  • To facilitate a series of Peer Support meetings with other Disability Service Ambassadors, to support the transition of new students with a disability to the university.
  • To speak with new students about the challenges of transition to university as well as the positive opportunities of university life.
  • Some public speaking will be involved.

Subject to ambassadors completing the required training, you will be able to support our bespoke applicant Information Events. These are currently planned on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 10th July 2024, On Campus, all day event.
  • Thursday 11th July 2024, Online, timings TBC. 

Initial meetings will take place in the autumn term:

  • Wednesday 18th September 2024, 2:00pm – 3:30pm – Supporting New Students’ Transition to University.
  • October Event TBC
  • November Event TBC

Following Semester 1, there will be further opportunities to apply to represent the Disability Service as an ambassador at Disabled Student Network Semester 2 events, and Disability Service Summer Information events in 2025.

The closing date for applications is Friday 3rd May 2024. Shortlisted applicants will be asked to complete a short online group interview on Friday 14th June 2024, between 2:30pm - 4:00pm.

Person Specification

This role is only open to current Manchester Met Students who are enrolled in the 2024-2025 academic year and are registered with Disability Service. You must also meet the following requirements - 

  • Good communication skills and an understanding of the importance of good communication.
  • Highly motivated and able to work under own initiative and as part of a team.
  • Approachable and friendly with a keen interest in supporting new Manchester Met students.
  • Understanding of and experience of university social activities (e.g. Societies, Sports) and willingness to speak about their own experiences.
  • Ability to interact with a broad range of people and able to anticipate their needs.
  • An awareness of the factors affecting disabled students in Higher Education and a willingness to talk about personal experience of studying with a disability.
  • Applicants must have at least a year’s experience as a student at Manchester Met.
