The current opportunity is available for current first or second year Manchester Met students. To apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role.
The role of Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Leader is open to Manchester Metropolitan University students, in their second and third year of study on specific courses running the PAL scheme.
Peer Assisted Learning is an internationally recognised scheme of academic support for university students. The post holder will work within a team of PAL Leaders and staff. You will plan and facilitate study sessions for students with the view to supplementing academic support provided by full time academic staff.
Five benefits of becoming a PAL Leader:
- Boost your employability by developing many skills highly prized by graduate recruiters through first-hand experience in leadership, teamwork, presentation, and coaching
- Gain confidence and perhaps a better degree result, as you recap and reinforce what you have learned
- Experience what it’s like to make a positive difference, helping students on your course
- Meet new people through our learning community
- Earn a good hourly wage with up to 5 hours work per week
- Earn 300 RISE points if you work the full academic year
This is an exciting opportunity for you to make a difference, for your peers and the university. You will be expected to facilitate and lead activities while sharing your ideas and personal experiences. PAL is a community. PAL is not re-teaching or being a teaching assistant. PAL Leaders are required to open up discussion and promote student engagement in line with our academic calendar. You will be there to increase the confidence of students attending sessions and signposting them to Manchester Met support services where needed. Our PAL sessions are usually facilitated by two or more PAL Leaders, who will support each other.
If successful, you will be:
- Facilitating PAL sessions or supporting existing sessions for students who are on the first year of your course
- Collaborating with staff from across the University
- Attending training, debriefs and events where you will receive support, resources, and feedback
- Able to take part in other roles for Manchester Met PAL Leaders
We promote applications from all sections of the community, irrespective of background, belief or identity, recognising the benefits that a diverse team can bring to PAL.
