The Department of Computing and Mathematics are looking for students to work as an Ambassadors. We are looking for students who are currently studying Mathematics to support an upcoming Maths Taster Day.
The event will give visiting students the opportunity to experience what studying Mathematics at Manchester Met is like, take part in subject-specific workshops, speak to current students, and visit both the Manchester Met and University of Manchester campuses.
Ambassadors will support the day by engaging with visiting students, answering questions about their experiences of studying Mathematics and student life at Manchester Met, helping to create a welcoming and positive environment, and supporting staff during the workshops.
Ambassadors will also be required to deliver a campus tour and help move students safely from the Manchester Met campus to the University of Manchester campus.
The day will begin in the Dalton Building Reception area at Manchester Met and will end in the Alan Turing Building at the University of Manchester.
Date: Wednesday 24 June 2026
Times: 9:00am – 1:00pm and 2:30pm – 3:15pm
Students must be available for both sessions.
The workshops taking place at Manchester Met will include:
Workshop A: Fractals
Location: Dalton Building, Room 1.35
This session introduces students to fractals: complex and beautiful shapes created using simple mathematical rules. Students will explore common fractals, how they are drawn, and how Python can be used to generate them.
Workshop B: Error Correction
Location: Dalton Building, Room 6.26
This session explores how computerised systems, from barcode scanners to satellites, use error correction to detect and fix errors when transmitting information. Students will learn how matrices can be used to create a simple version of this and how mathematics helps send photos back from space.
