The current opportunity is available
for current. Manchester Met students, to apply you must be based in the UK for
the duration of the role
The School of English is seeking enthusiastic and creative students to become EDI Community and Belonging Student Ambassadors.
We are looking for students who are passionate about creating a welcoming, inclusive and connected community within the School. Rather than delivering a pre-designed programme, Student Ambassadors will be encouraged to develop and lead their own ideas for activities and events that foster community, belonging, equality, diversity and inclusion amongst students.
This is an opportunity to make a positive difference to the student experience, develop valuable organisational and leadership skills, and contribute to a more inclusive School community.
What Will You Do?
As an EDI Community and Belonging Student Ambassador, you will:
- Propose an activity, project or event that supports community and belonging within the School.
- Plan and organise the practical aspects of your activity.
- Promote your activity to fellow students.
- Deliver and facilitate events and activities.
- Gather feedback from participants.
- Produce a short summary of outcomes and impact.
- Work collaboratively with School staff and other Student Ambassadors.
- Act as a positive advocate for inclusion, respect and community within the School.
What Kind of Activities Could You Propose?
Your idea should help students feel welcomed, connected, represented or supported. Examples might include:
- Cultural exchange and celebration events.
- Language cafés and conversation groups.
- Film screenings and discussions.
- Creative workshops.
- Community-building social activities.
- Peer networking opportunities.
- Activities celebrating underrepresented voices and experiences.
- Intercultural dialogue events.
- Book, film or games discussions exploring diversity and inclusion.
- Wellbeing or belonging initiatives.
- Activities that support transition into university life.
These examples are only suggestions. We welcome innovative ideas developed by students themselves.
Connecting Your Idea to Manchester Met's EDI Priorities
Your activity should support one or more of Manchester Met's Equality, Diversity and Inclusion priorities, particularly its commitment to creating "an intentionally inclusive culture of belonging" and promoting an inclusive student experience. The University's strategy focuses on creating an environment where all students are treated with fairness, dignity and respect and are able to thrive.
You do not need to be familiar with the University's strategy documents (although these can be found on the website). Instead, consider whether your activity helps to:
- Build a sense of belonging.
- Bring students together across different backgrounds.
- Celebrate diversity.
- Encourage inclusion and mutual respect.
- Create opportunities for students to connect and support one another.
- Amplify underrepresented voices and experiences.
- Improve the student experience for members of the School community.
These themes reflect the University's Inclusive and Diverse Culture Strategy and its focus on inclusive student experiences and celebrating diversity.
Hours and Duration
- Each Student Ambassador can be allocated 30 paid hours.
- The role will run for approximately two months.
- Students may claim a maximum of 4 hours per week.
- Hours may include planning, organisation, promotion, delivery and evaluation activities.
- Student Ambassadors could apply for a position in Semester 1 and apply later for a position in Semester 2, if desired.
Available Positions
- 4 Student Ambassador positions available for Semester 1
- 4 Student Ambassador positions available for Semester 2. Applications for Semester 2 will become available in January.
Can I Apply for Both Semesters?
Yes. Students may apply for both Semester 1 and Semester 2 opportunities. If applying for Semester 2 after completing the Semester 1 role, applicants should either:
- Propose a new activity or project; or
- Provide a rationale for continuing or expanding their Semester 1 activity, demonstrating evidence of student engagement, demand or impact.
