Job Description

The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students, to apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role.
 
The main purpose of this role is to provide research support to colleagues and support staff for the Punishing Words project by assisting with research data collection and analysis, and the dissemination of findings to appropriate research groups and contacts related to the project.

The role will support the development of new areas in the field of Critical Applied Linguistics/Educational Sociolinguistics.

 
Dates: 1 June 2024 - Upon completion of work but no later than 1 July 2024
Hours: Hours of working are to be determined by the employee; no more than 27 hours worth of work in total 
Location: Online

Key Tasks
Research Activities
 This project is exploring how the policing of spoken language features within school behaviour policies more broadly. It also explores the links between the policing of spoken language and the socio-economic/racial demographics of schools. Whilst more detailed instructions will be provided by the lead researcher in an online meeting, the work will involve:
  • Meeting at appropriate times with the lead researcher.
  • From school websites, generating a corpus of school behaviour policies from a pre-determined list of schools/academies. This list will be provided by the lead researcher
  • Preparing all files for corpus-driven analysis, including formatting and naming.
  • Sharing the corpus with the lead researcher using appropriate software.
  • Mapping school postcodes against the UK Government indices of deprivation database.

This work which requires basic-level computational skills and access to the Internet.

This work can all be carried out from home.

Plan and prioritise their own work and resources, in order to determine the most effective way to achieve agreed research objectives.

Contribute to the production of research reports and publications.

Use initiative and judgement to develop appropriate techniques in order to facilitate research work and resolve problems affecting the achievement of objectives and deadlines.


Liaison and Networking

Provide regular updates to the project lead on the progress of the work and disseminate the findings to the project lead in online meetings.

Participate in internal and external partnerships and networks in order to aid the dissemination of research findings, to share best practice, and to enhance the reputation of the University.


Service Provision
Proactively and effectively engage with quality assurance procedures to ensure that University standards are upheld.

Collaborate with academic colleagues on research development and future direction. 

Team Working
Actively participate as a member of the research team, 
offering general help and guidance to others who may be assisting with the research project.

Attend Faculty, Department and Programme meetings/boards as appropriate to proactively contribute to decision making.

Introduce new starters to the area, giving training on basic skills and activities to assist their induction to the team.

Assist in the supervision of taught postgraduate and/or research students, as required, to support the development research skills.

Person Specification

This role is only open to current Manchester Met students who meet the criteria below:
Essential
* Ability to undertake research by preparing, setting up, conducting and recording the outcome of online field work.
* Proficiency in the use of relevant software packages such as Microsoft Excel.
* Possess sufficient breadth or depth of knowledge to work within an established research team.
* Experience of data collection.
* Experience of prioritising work independently and as part of a team in order to deliver individual and team objectives
 
Desirable
* Knowledge of education/applied linguistics including an understanding of relevant research methods and techniques in the area.
