Student Internship 2025 - Game Design for Sustainability
The intern will assist in data collection on the workstream, Game Design for Sustainability, and in carrying out a scoping review of tabletop and board games with climate, nature and environment themes.
The role involves:
- Identifying currently-available board games that have nature, environment or climate themes;
- Collecting basic data about these games from the website, Board Game Geek and other online repositories and fan sites;
- Compiling and presenting this data using Excel
If the successful intern has an interest in pursuing the research beyond data collection, there will also be the opportunity to develop commentaries and reflections of specific games for inclusion in an online database, The Green Mediography.

Location: This internship is based within the Manchester Game Centre, a cross-university research group that conducts research on and with games, both digital and analogue.
Students will be expected to develop the following skills and experiences while carrying out this internship
- Independent research skills in response to a specific brief;
- Maintain a high level of detail to detail and data integrity;
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel (data organization, sorting, filtering, basic analysis);
- An understanding of game design practices across the tabletop and board game industry.
