 Student Internship 2025 - Game Design for Sustainability
 
We are looking for a motivated research intern to assist with data collection and compilation for STRATEGIES – Sustainable Transition for Europe’s Game Industries, a live research project exploring sustainability practices in game development.
 
The intern will assist in data collection on the workstream, Game Design for Sustainability, and in carrying out a scoping review of tabletop and board games with climate, nature and environment themes. 
 
The role involves:
  • Identifying currently-available board games that have nature, environment or climate themes;
  • Collecting basic data about these games from the website, Board Game Geek and other online repositories and fan sites;
  • Compiling and presenting this data using Excel
If the successful intern has an interest in pursuing the research beyond data collection, there will also be the opportunity to develop commentaries and reflections of specific games for inclusion in an online database, The Green Mediography.

Dates: 26 May 2025 - 18 July 2025
Hours per week: 10
Location: This internship is based within the Manchester Game Centre, a cross-university research group that conducts research on and with games, both digital and analogue. 

 
Students will be expected to develop the following skills and experiences while carrying out this internship
  • Independent research skills in response to a specific brief;
  • Maintain a high level of detail to detail and data integrity;
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel (data organization, sorting, filtering, basic analysis);
  • An understanding of game design practices across the tabletop and board game industry.
 
Please Note - Students are only eligible to undertake one internship under the 2025 Student Internship offering. 

Person Specification

This role is only open to current Manchester Met Students who meet the following requirements - 
 
  • Currently studying a relevant field (e.g., game development, game art, environmental science, english, media)
  • Good organisational and time management skills
  • Good independent research skills
  • Ability to follow a specific brief and find information from various online sources
  • Attention to detail, essential when extracting and compiling data
  • Basic proficiency in Excel
  • An interest in gaming (especially tabletop or board games) is desirable but not essential
  •  
      
    Please Note - As part of the 2025 Student Internship offering, priority will be given to Level 5 & 6 students who have specified in the Careers Registration survey (this is completed during enrolment and cannot be changed at this time) that they have had no work experience in the last 12 months and would like some on campus work or a short work placementHowever, applications are welcomed from all students meeting the criteria below.
