Student Internship 2025 - Sustainable Fashion Research Intern

 

We are seeking a motivated and research-oriented intern to support the development of industry case studies on fashion sustainability. These case studies will be used as learning and teaching resources to enhance student engagement with real-world sustainability challenges in the fashion industry. The successful candidate will work closely with MFI sustainability lead, industry professionals, and sustainability experts to research, analyse, and document key sustainability initiatives in fashion.

 

This role is ideal for a student with a strong interest in sustainable fashion, research, and industry analysis. It provides an opportunity to gain valuable experience in academic research, develop critical thinking skills, and contribute to shaping sustainable fashion education at Manchester Fashion Institute and Manchester Met.

 

Key Responsibilities

Identify and analyse the potential for unique case studies for global and local fashion brands, designers, and organisations implementing sustainability initiatives.

Conduct in-depth research on sustainability issues in fashion, including environmental impact, circular economy, ethical supply chains, sustainable materials, and corporate sustainability strategies.

Review academic and industry literature to support the case study research.

Where possible Interview industry professionals, academics, and other stakeholders to gather insights and first-hand accounts of sustainability practices.

Working with the academic lead develop well-structured case study reports, including background information, key challenges, strategies implemented, and outcomes and assist in creating engaging learning materials based on the case studies for integration into modules and extra-curricular workshops.

 

Skills and Qualifications

  • Research, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent writing and communication abilities with attention to detail.
  • Interest in fashion sustainability and knowledge of key issues affecting the industry.
  • Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and collaborate with various stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with sustainability frameworks (e.g., circular economy, cradle-to-cradle, lifecycle analysis) is desirable but not required.

Person Specification

This role is only open to current Manchester Met Students who meet the following requirements - 
 

Essential:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate programme in fashion, textiles, business, environmental science, creative writing, sociology, art or journalism.
  • Strong interest in fashion sustainability and industry best practices.
  • Strong writing and communication skills, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and critical thinking.
 

Desirable:

  • Experience in writing reports, case studies, or academic papers.
  • Knowledge of sustainability frameworks such as circular economy, ethical sourcing, or lifecycle assessment.
  • Basic design skills (Adobe Creative Suite, Canva) for visual materials.
 
  
Please Note - As part of the 2025 Student Internship offering, priority will be given to Level 5 & 6 students who have specified in the Careers Registration survey (this is completed during enrolment and cannot be changed at this time) that they have had no work experience in the last 12 months and would like some on campus work or a short work placementHowever, applications are welcomed from all students meeting the criteria below.
