The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students from the Department of Sociology and Criminology, to apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role.
An opportunity has arisen for an 8-week internship with the Drugs, Policy and Social Change (DPSC) research group. The successful candidates will be integral members of the DPSC Research Group, working on the annual GMTRENDS (Greater Manchester Testing and Research on Emerging and New DrugS) research project. The multi-method research includes:
i) surveys of young people who use drugs,
ii) a survey of professionals who work with a range of drug users &
iii) a young person trend focus that includes semi-structured interviews with approx 20-25 young people (aged 13-25).
This opportunity is for:
- Two interns to work on promoting the surveys, and analysing and writing up the findings. The interns will gain experience of survey promotion, analysis of quantitative and qualitative data and the writing up of findings. The work will lead to them being named as a co-author of the research report.
- Two interns to conduct, transcribe and analyse the young person trend focus. The interns will gain experience of interviewing, transcribing and analysing qualitative data. The work will lead to them being named as a co-author of the research report.
The successful candidates will be provided with an opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of local substance use trends. They will gain experience of conducting research and working in a research team environment. This will enhance their CV through developing their academic skills and confidence.
Dates: To commence in early May 2024 (exact start date to be confirmed) – internships will be completed by Friday 11th July 2025.
Hours: The internship will be a total of 60 hours and will take place over approximately 8 weeks.
Successful students will be invited to attend an interview on Friday 11th April 2024 (details to be confirmed).
Please Note - As part of the 2025 Sociology Internship offering, priority will be given to Level 5 & 6 students who have specified in the Careers Registration survey (this is completed during enrolment and cannot be changed at this time) that they have had no work experience in the last 12 months and would like some on campus work or a short work placement and those who have not worked via Jobs4Students previously. However, applications are welcomed from all students meeting the criteria below.
Students are only eligible to undertake one Sociology Internship.
