Job Description

The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students, to apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role.
 
We are recruiting a Games Developer for a new project that combines psychology and gaming experiences to assist parents communicate with their adolescent children. The main purpose of this role is to provide research support to colleagues and support staff for the Family Domains Serious Game project by assisting with game design and development of a game slice.

The role involves developing a 3D game demo that will see players step into the shoes of the parent. Assets can be sourced, but must be credited as part of this project. The use of AI for idea generation is accepted, but you cannot use AI generated content towards the game demo itself. The game will be developed using Unity. Support the development of new areas in the field of serious games, and specifically, the integration of psychology into video games. 
 
The Games Developer will be responsible for the development of a demo within a set deadline, the successful student will have the opportunity to apply their own creative choices in the game, but you will be expected to work against a project specification.

This is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their portfolios and experience in the games industry.

Key Tasks
Research Activities
You will be supervised and meet regularly with Martin Turner and John Henry and the rest of a research team, while making connections that will give you insight into the psychology behind the approach the game is taking.

Plan and prioritise own work and resources, within project framework, in order to determine the most effective way to achieve agreed objectives.
 
Use initiative and judgement to develop appropriate techniques in order to facilitate work and resolve problems affecting the achievement of objectives and deadlines.
 

Liaison and Networking
Present progress research to the team.
 
 
Service Provision
Proactively and effectively engage with quality assurance procedures to ensure that University standards are upheld.
 
Collaborate with academic colleagues on game development and future direction.
 

Team Working
Actively participate as a member of the team.
 

Miscellaneous

Person Specification

This role is only open to current Manchester Met students who meet the criteria below:
 
Essential
  • Be a current Manchester Met student studying Computing
  • Ability to undertake research by preparing, setting up, conducting and recording the outcome of experiments and/or field work.
  • Ability to use initiative, creativity and judgement to develop appropriate approaches in order to further research.
  • Proficiency in the use of relevant software packages such as Unity.
  • Possess sufficient breadth or depth of knowledge to work within an established research team.
  • Experience of data collection.
  • Experience of presenting and communicating complex information to a range of audiences, both orally and in writing.
  • Experience of prioritising work independently and as part of a team in order to deliver individual and team objectives.
 
Desirable
  • Knowledge of serious games and game development, including an understanding of relevant research methods and techniques in the area.
