Job Description

The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students, to apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role.
 

Manchester School of Theatre is recruiting Theatre Ushers for work across the academic year in the Grosvenor East Building. Ushers will be recruited to a 'pool' of students who will asked to work as and when there are performances during the 2026/2027 academic year.

 

Duties will include - 

  • Ensuring that the auditorium and Front of House area is clean and tidy.
  • Welcoming and greeting members of the public in a polite and friendly manner.
  • Collecting tickets for admission into the theatre.
  • Ensuring entrances and pathways into the theatre are well lit and free from obstructions. Open and hold doors open for the audience to enter when the house is open.
  • Answering questions regarding show and interval times and building navigation.
  • Distributing programmes.
  • Assisting patrons with access requirements as needed.
  • Directing audience to their seats.
  • Ensuring that food and drink is not taken into the theatre, that mobile phones are switched off, and that unauthorised photography of the production is not taken.
  • Monitoring the audience and ensuring that safety rules are adhered to.
  • Ensuring the auditorium is clear of any rubbish after performances, and retrieving and logging any lost property.
 

Ushers will be briefed by staff on the theatre running times including the length of the interval, and when the house will open. Ushers will be informed if there are any warnings for the audience such as smoking, flashing light, nudity, scenes of a sexual nature, use of firearms or weapons, or loud noises during the performance.

 

Ushers will be trained in emergency protocol and guiding members of the audience to the exits in the event of an evacuation. The ushers will know the exit route out of the theatre and the assembly point.

Person Specification

This role is only open to current Manchester Met Students who - 
 
  • Study at Manchester School of Theatre
  • Are professional and have an approachable friendly demeanour 
  • Have strong, evidenced communication skills and excellent time-keeping
  • Are able to create a good rapport with staff and members of the public
 
*Please note - Students who currently already work as Theatre Ushers do not need to reapply for this role. This role is ideal for individuals with an interest in arts, performance, theatre or live events, and offers valuable experience supporting public-facing cultural activity within a university setting.
 

Skills and Experience

  •  Strong verbal communication skills
  • A confident, approachable manner with an audience-focused attitude
  • Awareness of access and inclusion, with the ability to respond sensitively to different needs
  • Ability to remain calm, attentive and professional in a live performance environment
  • Previous front-of-house or customer service experience is desirable, but not essential
