Job Description

The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students from the School of Sociology and Criminology, to apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role.
 
The role of Qualitative Research Assistant will require you to support a lecturer on a research project which explores the experiences of disabled women in the workplace. You will:
  • Review the relevant academic literature
  • Analyse open text responses to a survey, identify themes and create a coding framework
  • Write up your findings and produce a short briefing document focused on recommendations for policy makers and organisations
We are looking for a motivated Manchester Met student who has knowledge of the principles of qualitative research. You will gain:
  • Practical experience of the analysis of real-world qualitative data.
  • Experience of researcher decision-making (i.e., making and justifying methodological choices about how data are analysed)
  • Time management skills and the ability to prioritise tasks independently
  • Experience of working collaboratively with academic staff 
  • The opportunity to contribute to policy change.
  
Date(s): End May 2026 to early July 2026 (to be agreed based on student availability)
 
Hours of Work: approx. 10 hours per week over a 6 week period - start and finish times are flexible as well as number of hours worked each week. This can be discussed at interview. 
 
Place of Work: this role can be performed fully remotely or on a hybrid basis (i.e. in part off campus and in part on campus) depending on student preference.  This can be discussed at interview. 
 

Person Specification

This role is only open to current Manchester Met students from the School of Sociology and Criminology who meet the following requirements: 
 
Essential: 
  • A current Level 5 or 6 student within the School of Sociology and Criminology
  •  Familiarity with the principles of the thematic analysis of qualitative data 
  • Good interpersonal and problem-solving skills 
  • Good organisation and time management
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines 
Desirable:
  • An interest in workplace inequalities with a focus on disability and gender. 
  • An understanding of neurodiversity and inclusive practice.
 
Please Note - As part of the 2026 Sociology Internship offering, priority will be given to Level 5 & 6 students who have specified in the Careers Registration survey (this is completed during enrolment and cannot be changed at this time) that they have had no work experience in the last 12 months and would like some on campus work or a short work placement and those who have not worked via Jobs4Students previously. However, applications are welcomed from all students meeting the criteria below.
