Job Description

The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students, to apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role.
 
The main purpose of this role is to provide research support to colleagues and support staff for the" Grassroots organizing for a just energy transition: The case of wind farm development projects on Scotland’s Isle of Lewis by assisting with research data collection and analysis, and the dissemination of findings to appropriate research groups and contacts related to the project.

Support the development of new areas in the field of sustainability and just transition.
 
Dates: 20/05/2026 - 21/07/2026
Hours16 hours per week. There is a flexible working pattern to be agreed with the researchers
Locationremote working, with some on campus meetings.

Key Tasks

Research Activities

Your primary role will be to support the research team through the collection and management of qualitative and secondary data. You will be required to:

  • Transcribe qualitative interviews accurately and in a timely manner
  • Identify, organise, and store relevant secondary data
  • Monitor and keep track of relevant events and contextual information to inform the research team
  • Plan, prioritise, and organise your own workload and resources to meet agreed objectives and deadlines
  • Conduct literature and database searches using standard academic techniques and methods
  • Write up findings from your own research activities and prepare materials for presentation to the research team and relevant stakeholders
  •  Contribute to the production of research reports and publications
  • Use initiative and judgement to develop appropriate techniques in order to facilitate research work and resolve problems affecting the achievement of objectives and deadlines
Liaison and Networking
  • Present findings to the team and other stakeholders; and in appropriate articles for publication, such as academic/professional journals or conferences where appropriate.
  •  Participate in internal and external partnerships and networks in order to aid the dissemination of research findings, to share best practice, and to enhance the reputation of the University.
Service Provision
  • Proactively and effectively engage with quality assurance procedures to ensure that University standards are upheld.
  •  Collaborate with academic colleagues on research development and future direction.
 Team Working
  • Actively participate as a member of the research team, offering general help and guidance where appropriate
  • Attend research team meetings to proactively contribute to decision making.
 
Miscellaneous

Person Specification

This role is only open to current Manchester Met students who meet the criteria below:

Essential

  • Studying for, or holding a post graduate degree, equivalent qualification or substantial relevant experience, and evidence of continuous professional development, ideally in organisation studies, sustainability, environmental studies or another relevant social science discipline
  • Experience of qualitative data collection (e.g. secondary data) and the ability to organise, store, and manage research data accurately and securely
  • Ability to transcribe interviews with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to use initiative, creativity, and sound judgement to develop and adapt appropriate approaches to support research and scholarly activities
  • Experience of communicating complex information clearly and effectively to a range of audiences, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to prioritise workload, work independently, and collaborate effectively as part of a research team to meet project objectives
  • Knowledge of, and strong interest in, contemporary issues related to sustainability and socio‑ecological justice

Desirable

  • Experience of blog and report writing
