Job Description

The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students, to apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role.

Overview

We are seeking two enthusiastic and reliable Level 5 or Level 6 Criminology and/or Sociology students to be Student Mentors for our Level 4 students on Working with Data and Evidence Modules (Research Methods)

The role involves supporting Level 4 students during drop-in sessions, providing guidance with their Working with Data and Evidence module, particularly around methods-related assessment questions. Mentors will also offer general peer support, helping students navigate other aspects of university life and encouraging engagement, confidence and belonging within the programme, while also facilitating activities in the space.

Key Responsibilities

Attend scheduled drop-in support sessions (see hours below)
Provide peer mentoring and guidance to Level 4 students.
Support students with methods-related questions connected to the Working with Data and Evidence module
Help students develop confidence in approaching assignments and university study
Create a welcoming, inclusive and supportive environment within the open learning space

Time Commitment

The role will run for 11 weeks.

Mentors must be available on:

Mondays (minimum of 2 hours between 1:00pm and 4:00pm)
Wednesdays (minimum of 2 hours between 1:00pm and 4:00pm)

Dates: Monday 12 October - Wednesday 16 December 2026

Hours of Work: Minimum 4 hours a week (over Monday and Wednesday)

Details of briefing/training: Training and briefing will be provided

Location: on Campus (Geoffrey Manton Building)

Person Specification

This role is only open to current Level 5 or Level 6 Criminology and/or Sociology students you must have;

Good communication and interpersonal skills
Be approachable, supportive and reliable
Reliable, organised and able to manage time effectively.
Be committed to helping fellow students succeed
Completed the working with Data and Evidence module (previously known as Working with Quantitative Evidence)
Confident using SPSS for both univariate and bivariate analysis
Must be available on:
- Mondays (minimum of 2 hours between 1:00pm and 4:00pm)
- Wednesdays (minimum of 2 hours between 1:00pm and 4:00pm)
