Job Description

The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students, to apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role.

We are looking to appoint a postgraduate researcher to work as Project Coordinator to support delivery of the 2024 QuietManDave Prize.

The QuietManDave Prize celebrates short-form writing and the life of Dave Murray who loved to experience new places, art and events and write about them. The Prize offers awards of £1,000* for Flash Fiction and £1,000* Flash Non-Fiction as well as runner-up prizes. Both Prizes are open internationally to writers aged 16 or over – and we are particularly keen to encourage, discover and celebrate new writers. Sponsored entry is available for those who might not otherwise be able to participate.

Dave Murray entertained and informed many through his blog quietmandave.co.uk. He was a keen theatre critic, performed poetry at open mic sessions and loved flash fiction. He embraced writing relatively late in life but did so with a passion. The QuietManDave Prize, named in honour of his memory and achievements, will seek to enable and promote new writing. The QuietManDave Prize has been supported through the generosity of family and friends of Dave. Find out more about the Prize here: QuietManDave Prize | Manchester Metropolitan University (mmu.ac.uk).

The Project Coordinator will work closely with senior academics in the Department of English who will offer ongoing support, guidance and mentoring. This would be a great opportunity for a postgraduate researcher looking to gain experience of working on a major arts project within a University context.

The role will involve coordination of all aspects of the Prize, working across three main areas – launching, judging and awarding the prizes – with key tasks including:
  • Producing text updates for the Prize website including terms and conditions and instructions for entry and for press releases and other promotional activity.
  • Handling queries about the Prize from entrants.
  • Processing entries to the Prize securely and liaising with judges to select the finalists and winners.
  • Liaising with finalists and winners to collate information (e.g. biogs, photos).
  • Coordinating the prize-giving event, including invitations, running order and any digital aspects.
  • Liaising with teams around the University who will support delivery of the project, including Digital (web team), Press Office, Marketing, Design Studio, Legal, Finance and events teams.
  • Producing a detailed project report that could be used to support delivery of future years.

Dates: 29 July 2024 - 13 December 2024
Hours of Work: Flexible around students
Details of training: to take place week commencing 29 July
