Job Description

The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students, to apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role.
   
The Sociology Department at Manchester Met is looking for 3 designers for the URTOPIA project. The project aims to introduction gamification methods into the learning module for quantitative methods (known as ‘Working with Quantitative Evidence’ WQE), a crucial component of the undergraduate sociology programme.
 

As a student intern in gamification and learning experience support, you play a pivotal role in enhancing the quantitative methods learning module within the undergraduate sociology program. This internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the implementation of gamified elements, making a positive impact on student engagement and understanding.

 

Key activities and responsibilities:

Artistic Content Development:
  • Collaborate with the learning experience design team to create visually appealing gamified elements, including interactive simulations, engaging quizzes, and scenario-based challenges that capture students' interest.
  • Ensure all artistic content aligns with key methodological techniques and effectively represents real-world applications in a visually compelling manner.
Integration of EDI in Artistic Design: 
  • Work closely with the EDI team to integrate equality, diversity, and inclusivity principles into the artistic assets and storytelling of the gamified platform.
  • Develop character designs, environments, and narrative elements that reflect diverse perspectives, representation, and cultural sensitivity, creating an inclusive and relatable experience for all students.
Storytelling and Narrative Design: 
  • Develop engaging storylines and scenarios that contextualize quantitative methods in a meaningful way, enhancing student understanding through immersive storytelling.
  • Collaborate with students and faculty to identify key themes, sociological insights, and real-life challenges that can be effectively illustrated through narrative, making the learning content more impactful and memorable.
Documentation and Reporting: 
  • Maintain detailed documentation of the artistic development process, including design choices, visual styles, storytelling elements, challenges encountered, and solutions implemented.
  • Prepare progress reports and contribute to presentations showcasing the artistic assets and storytelling strategies, demonstrating their impact on student engagement and learning outcomes.
 
Date(s): ASAP for 6 months
Hours of Work: 130 total (5 hours per week)
Details of briefing/training (if relevant): Briefing will be done with the hiring manager before beginning the role

Person Specification

This role is only open to current Manchester Met Students who meet the following requirements - 
 

Essential:

  • Second or third year student currently studying an undergraduate course, preferably
  • Strong interest in the intersection of education, technology and gamification.
  • Creative mindset with the ability to think innovatively about learning experiences.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Familiarity with basic principles of equality, diversity and inclusivity.
 
Desirable:
  •  Studying a sociology, education, game design or a related field.
