The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students, to apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role.
This internship will be based within the Department of Natural Sciences, and the intern will support Dr Leon Clarke's ongoing research activity via assistance with completion of environmental chemistry laboratory measurements, for different active research projects.
The intern role will be particularly suitable for an individual interested in pursuing further academic study (e.g., MSc) and/or a research career (e.g., via completion of a PhD), or an individual seeking employment within a laboratory environment.
The intern will be required to complete careful (i.e., accurate and precise) chemical preparations of environmental samples (e.g., lake and marine sediments) for subsequent determination of environmental chemistry parameters; example projects include measurements of sediment %CaCO3, elemental concentrations and/or stable-isotope ratios.

Students will be expected to develop the following skills and experiences while carrying out this internship
- Environmental chemistry laboratory skills, and gaining of associated environmental science knowledge.
- Research project organisation skills, including appropriate record keeping.
- An ability to assess and critique environmental chemistry data quality.
- An ability to work both independently and efficiently.
Please Note - As part of the 2025 Student Internship offering, priority will be given to Level 5 & 6 students who have specified in the Careers Registration survey (this is completed during enrolment and cannot be changed at this time) that they have had no work experience in the last 12 months and would like some on campus work or a short work placement. However, applications are welcomed from all students meeting the criteria below.
Students are only eligible to undertake one internship under the 2025 Student Internship offering.
