Job Description

The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students, to apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role.
 
 The main purpose of this role is to provide support to colleagues and support staff in the development of a website and logo for MCRL - The Manchester Centre for Research in Linguistics by assisting, and where necessary taking the lead, with the design of our research centre website and the production of a centre logo. 
  
Dates: [June 2nd 2025 - June 30th 2025]
Hours: [Max. 16 hours per week of a total of 52 hours during this period] 
Location: [Distance Work - Check in will be online or face-to-face in Grosvenor East Building]

Key Tasks
Research Activities
 The Manchester Centre for Research in Linguistics seeks a skilled and proactive Web Developer/Designer to create and launch a professional, user-friendly, and visually appealing website that aligns with university branding guidelines and effectively represents the Centre's academic excellence and research activities.

Key Responsibilities

Stock Take: Assess and document existing digital assets and web content to determine what should be retained, updated, or developed anew.

Benchmarking: Conduct a review of comparable academic and research-oriented websites, identifying best practices and trends to inform our web strategy.

Strategic Planning: Develop a comprehensive, actionable website development plan, clearly outlining the approach, milestones, and deadlines.

Needs Assessment: Engage with Centre staff and stakeholders to gather requirements and produce a detailed needs list, ensuring the website meets all functional, informational, and accessibility needs.

Implementation: Execute the approved web strategy within the set timeline, ensuring adherence to budget, scope, and quality standards.

Visual Identity: Design and produce a distinctive and engaging logo in alignment with Centre and university branding guidelines.

Compliance: Ensure all web development and content adhere strictly to university standards, accessibility requirements, and any applicable regulations.

Delivery: Successfully launch the completed website by the end of July, ensuring all technical and content aspects are fully functional and approved.  

Miscellaneous

Person Specification

This role is only open to current Manchester Met students who meet the criteria below:
Essential

·       A good first degree in a relevant field and currently undertaking postgraduate study in web or graphic design.

·       Demonstrable experience in web design and development, ideally within higher education or research settings.

·       Proficiency in contemporary web technologies, including:

o   Content Management Systems (e.g., WordPress)

o   HTML, CSS, and JavaScript

·       Competence in graphic design, including:

o   Logo creation

o   Visual branding for web and digital platforms

·       Working knowledge of web accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG 2.1) and commitment to inclusive design.

·       Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet tight deadlines.

·       Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with confidence engaging a variety of stakeholders.

Desirable

·       Prior experience developing websites in accordance with UK higher education branding or compliance standards.

·       Interest in or familiarity with linguistics, communication studies, or related academic disciplines.
