Job Description

The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students, to apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role.
 
This is an exciting new post within the Careers & Employability Service to support students and graduates within our career space. You will be given the opportunity to gain practical experience participating in key operational activities such as one-to-one and group sessions, supporting the promotion of career events, sourcing new job roles, and helping students develop their employability.    

This opportunity is perfect for those students who have a real interest in pursuing a career which empowers others to achieve their goals and maximise their potential.   

You will work closely with all teams that make up the service. This will allow you to gain valuable knowledge of the careers support that the university is able to offer to students.  

Key Responsibilities:  
  • Act as a welcoming and approachable point of contact for students who visit the careers space. Be a confident host to the space, reassuring, welcoming and encouraging. Conducting check ins and managing waiting times. 
  • Answering basic careers questions around Jobs4Students, placements, enterprise and other support available.
  • Offering students clear guidance on CV formatting, along with examples, resources (e.g. CV360), and digital tools to support them.
  • Running small group info sessions about basic CV formatting information and resources. 
  • Running small group info sessions about job-searching, providing information on sector-specific job sites, professional body websites, etc. (Career Hub, LinkedIn, Prospects, etc.).
  • Signposting students to relevant resources (e.g. the Careers website, Career Hub, Prospects, etc), and/or drop-ins and appointments where required, and supporting students to book onto events. 
  • Sharing careers information to students and graduates in relation to all aspects of careers, employability and enterprise support and nudge forward and agree follow up actions.  
  • Inspiring, motivating and encouraging students to get involved in the range of extra-curricular events, activities and experiences that will help them stand out from the crowd and develop skills (e.g. Rise, internships, placements, etc). 
  • Supporting the developing of guide and project videos.
  • Updating and checking online guides and FAQ lists. 
  • Sourcing jobs for our ‘top jobs’ emails and newsletters and adding employer, careers, and employability related events to the Career Hub events page.
  • Updating print materials, including the advert window. 
  • Supporting and promoting Careers Service events, such as Welcome events, the Part-time Jobs Fair, Graduate Jobs & Placement Jobs Fairs, Future Me Week and themed Faculty Pop-Up Stand activities across campus.
  • Conducting lecture shout-outs promoting the Careers Service, key events and activities. 
  • Appearing in and contributing to student-facing social media and other promotional projects (including the Careers Service webpage).
  • Pass on employer/sector insights gained through events, networks and meetings with employers.
  • Staying up to date with digital Careers resources and the wider Manchester Met Careers offer for students.   
 
Dates of role: w/c 15 September 2025 (before the start of term) to August 2026. 
Hours: Minimum of 6.5 hours per week (this will vary depending on demand)  
 
Please note – if shortlisted, you will be required to attend an in-person assessment centre day (Monday 16 June 2025). If successfully appointed, you will also be required to attend an in-person training week (Monday 15 to Friday 19 September 2025).

Person Specification

This role is open to Manchester Met students that will be enrolled on a course during the whole of 2025/26 academic year and meet the following criteria:  

Essential:  
  • Active listening skills to be able to communicate effectively with a broad range of students and handle a diverse range of queries.
  • Ability to explain complex processes and vary communication style depending on each individual/setting.  
  • Can work with different stakeholders in a professional and positive manner
  • Can deal with multi-layered questions/queries with a determination and energy that helps the student identify the most important elements and supports them to make positive decisions  
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively and accommodate responsibilities alongside your studies.
  • Strong team player with the ability to work independently when required.
  • Ability to approach fellow students with confidence, engage them effectively, and promote relevant events and initiatives.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality  and treat people with respect.
  • Happy to be featured on the Careers Service webpage and on camera for social media promotion of the careers space or of the Careers Associate role, and/or for promotion of other Careers Service-related events and/or activities.  This may involve video, photography, or written content, such as sharing your tips with students, depending on the needs of the promotional activity.   

Desirable: 
  • Previous experience in a customer service environment, showcasing your ability to provide exceptional support to a diverse range of individuals.
  • Proficiency in creating engaging content for online platforms.
