Job Description

The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students, to apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role.
  
The role of Research Assistant will require you to support a lecturer on a research project which explores the experiences of disabled women in the labour market. 

You will be involved in analysing survey data from participants’ open text responses together with focus group data with a view to identifying common themes.  You will write up these findings and help produce a research report.  Specifically, this will involve using Excel to group open text responses into themes and integrate this into the wider survey findings. 

Dates:  16 June 2025  - 30 June 2025

Hours:   20 hours in total

Working pattern: The work can be done remotely with support provided via Teams. We are flexible around the timings that the work is done and are happy to explore this further with the successful candidate.

Person Specification

This role is only open to current Manchester Met Students who meet the following requirements - 
 
We are looking for a motivated Manchester Met student who has knowledge of the principles of qualitative and quantitative research and some practical experience of applying this.  This is an excellent opportunity to gain practical, paid experience of analysing real-world data.  Preference will be given to applicants who do not already have a placement or internship (paid or unpaid).

Essential criteria

• A current Level 5 or 6 student within the Department of Sociology 
• Practical experience of Excel; the student must have access to the use of Excel and the MMU One Drive/Sharepoint.
• Familiarity with the thematic analysis of qualitative data 
• Knowledge and practical experience of univariate analysis (descriptive statistics, frequency tables) and bivariate analysis (cross tabulations, examining relationships between an independent and a dependent variable).
• Understanding of data protection issues in research.
• Good interpersonal and problem-solving skills 
• Good organisation and time management
Desirable
• An interest in workplace inequalities with a focus on disability and gender; e
xperience of writing for a non-academic audience.
