Job Description

We are looking for Care Leavers, or Care Experienced, students to work as Care Leaver Ambassadors for the Widening Participation team. Our team works with specific groups of school and college learners to inform them about, and support them into, Higher Education.

You must be a Care Leaver/Care Experienced to be eligible for this job.

We need you to inspire Care Experienced young people, and be role models on specifically targeted events. These may include the following:

  • Small campus visits
  • Collaborative network visits
  • Conferences
  • Awards ceremonies
  • Mentoring projects
  • Network meetings

Tasks may include:

  • Speaking about your experiences in the education system, promoting Higher Education as a viable option for all Care Leavers who have the aptitude and desire to go on to University. This may be one-to-one, or in small groups
  • Providing general support at events, such as chaperoning or helping learners complete activities
  •  Speaking to adults who support Care Experienced children, for example: social workers, leaving care team advisors, foster carers, or adult care leavers
It’s not essential that you are able to do all of these tasks, or feel comfortable with all tasks, straight away. Successful applicants will be supported to take on as many tasks as possible throughout their employment.

Application Method

Please complete a short application, of 500 words or fewer, explaining why you would like the job, and what skills you could bring to the team.

Successful applicants will be contacted towards the end of January/early February to arrange an informal interview.

  • Good listening skills and an empathetic, non-judgemental approach
  • Basic communication skills (you don’t need to be a confident public speaker)
  • Reliability and professionalism when attending events
  • Ability to work with young people and professionals (e.g. teachers, social workers, carers)
