Job Description

The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students, to apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role.
   
The Volunteer Keeper role offers a unique student placement opportunity for individuals studying animal welfare or related fields. This is a hands-on, supportive role designed to provide practical experience within a real-world animal care setting. You will work closely with the college’s expert animal welfare team and gain valuable insights into the daily responsibilities and practices involved in maintaining the health, safety, and wellbeing of animals.

Dates: 2 March - 30 April 2026
 
Hours: Up to 16 hours per week. The successful students will work hours when their academic timetable allows. This will be discussed with the college. Successful students will need to have a completed DBS (arranged by the Dept of Natural Sciences) before a start date can be agreed.

The Company
 
Salford City College is a group of 5 colleges in Salford intending to offer a course for every student. The Eccles Sixth-Form College campus is a centre of vocational excellence that is host to Eccles College Animal Park. The facility looks after over 500 animals including a range of species from: Alpacas, Marmosets, Capybaras, Cranes, Marine fish, Tegu to domestic species such as our home-bred at-risk sheep and goats. These are looked after by 5 full time staff and 2 part time staff with individual specialisms giving the trainee candidates a range of skills to learn from. 

Person Specification

This role is only open to current Manchester Met students who meet the following criteria:
 

Skills and Qualifications: 

- Educational Requirements: Currently enrolled on a relevant course of study.

Physical Requirements: 

- This role will require physical activity, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods. Normal expected load is around 20-25kg

- Ability to work in all weathers
 

Desirable Skills: 

- Interest or previous experience in animal welfare or husbandry. 

Strong communication skills and the ability to work within a team. 

- A caring and responsible attitude towards animals. 

- Ability to work to a high standard of cleanliness and organisation. 

- A willingness to learn and develop practical skills.
