Job Description

We're seeking an exceptionally creative and proactive student to join our team as Events, PR & Marketing Assistant. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone passionate about literature to gain comprehensive experience across all aspects of publishing, from digital marketing and author relations to event management and public relations.

You'll be instrumental in expanding our reach, building author platforms, and creating engaging content that connects our books with new audiences. This role offers genuine career development opportunities in a supportive environment where your ideas will be heard and your contributions will directly impact our success.

Working primarily remotely with regular Manchester meetings, you'll collaborate closely with Managing Director Isabelle Kenyon, while developing your own expertise in digital marketing, content creation, and literary event management. We're looking for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, creative environment and is eager to learn all aspects of independent publishing.

Key Responsibilities

Digital Marketing & Content Creation

  • Design and schedule social media graphics showcasing book reviews, author news, and publication milestones across all platforms
  • Manage our "Fly-back Fridays" social media campaign, creating compelling backlist spotlights that drive sales and engagement
  • Produce and edit video content for social media, including author interviews, book trailers, and behind-the-scenes content
  • Maintain and update our website with new reviews, author updates, and book information

Author Relations & Content Development

  • Conduct monthly author interviews for our Substack publication, developing engaging content that showcases our writers' personalities and creative processes
  • Build and maintain relationships with our author community, serving as a key point of contact for promotional activities
  • Coordinate author appearances at literary festivals and events, managing logistics and promotional materials

Event Management & Coordination

  • Represent Fly on the Wall Press at regional events such as our Book Swap event at House of Books and Friends (Fri 13th Feb 2026 from 6-8pm), for which you will receive time off in lieu
  • Coordinate with local literary communities and universities to expand our event reach

Public Relations & Outreach

  • Manage relationships with book influencers and bloggers, identifying new partnership opportunities and maintaining existing connections through HubSpot and Excel databases
  • Conduct targeted outreach to universities and academic institutions for event partnerships
  • Lead promotional activities for our upcoming Publishing Academy events
  • Maintain and update book metadata across multiple platforms with new reviews and reprint information

Administrative & Technical Tasks

  • Offer proofs to Waterstones booksellers in exchange for reviews, and maintain accurate records via the Google Excel Marketing Sheets assigned for each book

This role will be for up to 75 hours work (£1,008 funding).

Person Specification

This role is only open to current Manchester Met students who:
 
Must belong to the School of English - Undergraduate or Masters student.
 
  • Organisational Skills: Exceptional ability to prioritise tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines consistently
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills with confidence in professional correspondence
  • Technical Competence: Proficiency in Google Workspace, Excel, and email management systems
  • Social Media Savvy: Understanding of major social media platforms and content creation best practices
  • Literary Passion: Genuine interest in contemporary literature, particularly political fiction
  • Independence: Ability to work autonomously while maintaining regular communication with team members
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous approach to data management, content creation, and promotional materials

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with graphic design software (Canva, Indesign (Adobe), or similar)
  • Previous experience in social media management or content creation
  • Knowledge of the independent publishing industry
  • Event planning or coordination experience
  • Basic video editing skills
  • Understanding of digital marketing principles
