We are recruiting international student peer supporters to support newly arriving international students in the School of Nursing.
In this role, you will share your own experiences as an international student and offer practical, reassuring advice to new students as they settle into life in Manchester and at university. Your lived experience will help new students feel welcomed, informed, and confident during their arrival period.
You will be asked to create or deliver a short presentation based on your experiences as outlined below.
Guidance and mentoring will be provided by the International Support Team in the School of Nursing, and you will be supported to prepare your contribution.
What You Will Be Asked to Do
You will speak with new international students in small or large group settings, sharing your own experiences and offering tailored advice on topics such as:
- Top tips for getting around Manchester
(e.g. travel, food, fun activities, landmarks)
- University life and adapting to it
(challenges you faced, settling into new systems and expectations)
- What to expect when you arrive
(first impressions and early experiences)
- Culture shock
(navigating language, communication, and cultural differences)
- Studying at university
(time management, academic expectations, useful resources, challenges you overcame)
- Making friends
(building a social circle and connecting with others)
- Finding work
(job hunting experiences and balancing work with study)
- Accommodation
(finding housing and navigating the local rental market)
- Finance and budgeting
(bank accounts, student discounts, managing money)
- Culture exchange and identity
(celebrating cultural events and sharing your culture with others)
- Health and wellbeing
(self-care, homesickness, managing stress and burnout)
This is not an non exhaustive list as you can choose your own areas based on the above.
