About the Student Financial Support Team
The Student Financial Support Team administers hardship funding, bursaries, and scholarships to support students throughout their studies. We are committed to ensuring that financial support is accessible, effective, and communicated clearly. This internship will directly contribute to improving the student experience of applying for hardship funding and bursaries.
Role Purpose
The Student Financial Support Intern will lead a research project focused on understanding and improving the student journey when applying for hardship funding and bursaries. The intern will gather student insights, review sector practice, evaluate current processes, and present recommendations that will help the team enhance accessibility, clarity, and overall student experience.
This is an excellent opportunity for a student interested in research, service design, student support, communication, or policy development.
Key Responsibilities
The intern will:
Research & Benchmarking
Conduct desk-based research into financial support provision across other UK universities.
Identify examples of good practice in hardship funding administration and communication.
Data Collection, Analysis and Student Engagement
Analyse survey responses to identify themes, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.
Organise and facilitate student focus groups to gather detailed student voice and lived experience.
Summarise findings in a clear and accessible format for the team.
Process Review & Recommendations
Review current hardship application methods and identify potential improvements.
Assess the effectiveness of existing communication channels, advertising, and guidance materials.
Propose enhancements to streamline the application journey and increase clarity for applicants.
Resource Development
Help create new or improved resources for students—for example, web content, FAQs, guides, or process maps—to support a more accessible application process.

Please Note - As part of the 2026 Student Internship offering, priority will be given to Level 5 & 6 students who have specified in the Careers Registration survey (this is completed during enrolment and cannot be changed at this time) that they have had no work experience in the last 12 months and would like some on campus work or a short work placement. However, applications are welcomed from all students meeting the criteria below.
Students are only eligible to undertake one internship under the 2026 Student Internship offering.
