Job Description

The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students from the Department of Sociology (and Criminology), to apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role. 
 
This internship will support the development of a new Level 5 Research Methods module for approximately 450 Sociology and Criminology students. The intern will work with the module leaders to prepare and clean datasets that will be used in weekly teaching sessions, ensuring the datasets are appropriately structured for student use. Additional activities may include reviewing existing teaching materials, checking datasets for accuracy and usability, and contributing to the overall design and organisation of module resources.
 
Students who undertake this internship will expect to gain:
 
Practical experience applying quantitative data skills in a real academic context
Hands-on experience of data cleaning and dataset preparation
Experience of researcher decision-making (i.e., making and justifying real methodological choices about how data is structured and prepared for analysis)
Insight into curriculum and module design in higher education
Time management and ability to prioritise tasks independently
Experience of working collaboratively with academic staff 
  
Dates: 28 May 2026 - 19 June 2026 (students would need to be available on 28 & 29 May and 1 June 2026)
 
Hours of Work: Up to 20 hours a week over three weeks. 
 
Please Note - As part of the 2026 Sociology Internship offering, priority will be given to Level 6 students who have specified in the Careers Registration survey (this is completed during enrolment and cannot be changed at this time) that they have had no work experience in the last 12 months and would like some on campus work or a short work placement and those who have not worked via Jobs4Students previously. However, applications are encouraged from all students meeting the criteria below.
   
Students are only eligible to undertake one Sociology Internship.

Person Specification

This role is only open to current Manchester Met students from the Department of Sociology (and Criminology) who meet the following requirements: 
  • Currently studying BSc Sociology and/or BSc Criminology at Level 6
  • Demonstrated competence in quantitative methods (e.g. through Level 5 and Level 6 methods modules)
  • Experience working with datasets and doing data cleaning in SPSS
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
