Job Description

The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students. To apply, you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role.

The Biodiversity Monitoring & Student Coordinator will play a central role in supporting the delivery of the Make a Meter Matter Project (MAMM).

Make a Meter Matter is a collaboration between Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester City Council and the University of Manchester. The project forms part of Gardeners’ World’s national Make a Meter Matter programme. More information can be found here.

The aim of the project is to increase biodiversity in small, measurable green spaces by planting enhancements such as bulbs and wildflowers, allowing nature to grow, and installing infrastructure such as bug houses and logs. Enhancements will be led by Manchester City Council and supported by students, local residents and community groups.

The project covers public green spaces across Hulme, Moss Side and Rusholme, all located close to both University campuses.

The postholder will act as the main point of contact for participating students, responding to queries, coordinating activity across multiple sites, and ensuring effective monitoring and attendance tracking.

This role combines stakeholder engagement and project management with providing guidance and support to students undertaking biodiversity monitoring of local green spaces.

Typical duties include:

  • Act as the primary point of contact for students from Manchester Met and the University of Manchester.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance, resolve issues, and oversee project continuity across all sites.
  • Support student biodiversity monitoring activities and log attendance.
  • Liaise with the MAMM Steering Group to escalate concerns and support learning outcomes where required.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the main contact for students, providing guidance, pastoral support, and managing onboarding and engagement.
  • Assist students in biodiversity monitoring activities aligned with project objectives.
  • Track and record student attendance and hours across all project sites for reporting and compliance.
  • Organise student volunteer monitoring rotas and ensure the safe delivery of monitoring sessions.
  • Maintain communication with partners, attend meetings, and contribute to project reporting and impact evidence.

Dates: April 2026 – September 2026
Hours of work: Up to 4 hours per week
