The Careers Student Advisory Board (SAB) is a paid student group that works with the Careers and Employability Service (CES) to help shape careers support at Manchester Met.
2026/27 marks the fourth year of the SAB. We are looking for a new group of students to help us build on what we have learned so far and shape what comes next.
Over the past three years, SAB members have shared their experiences, challenged ideas, worked on research and projects, gathered views from other students and helped develop new approaches to careers and employability. Students have also gained valuable experience in communication, research, collaboration, leadership and working with professional staff.
We are looking for students who are curious, thoughtful and willing to listen to different perspectives. You do not need previous experience of using or working with a careers service. We are interested in what you can bring as a student and what you would like to gain from the experience.
This is not just a feedback group. You will work alongside other students and Careers staff to explore ideas, gather insight and help develop projects and activities.
What you will do
The work of the Student Advisory Board will evolve throughout the year in response to student feedback, emerging priorities and service needs. Activities may vary between meetings and will include contributing to research, running surveys, speaking with students at pop-up events, supporting focus groups, testing new ideas or providing input into specific Careers and Employability projects. We are looking for students who are adaptable, open to new opportunities and willing to get involved in different types of activities.
As a SAB member, you will:
- Share your own experiences and perspectives
- Listen to and engage with other students to understand a range of views
- Contribute ideas about careers and employability support
- Help explore student needs, experiences and priorities through activities through surveys, conversations, focus groups and pop-up events.
- Gather insight and feedback from other students where appropriate
- Work with other students and Careers staff to develop, test and improve ideas
- Take part in student-led projects and activities as priorities emerge throughout the year
- Provide constructive feedback and challenge ideas respectfully
- Present insights, ideas or recommendations to staff
You will not be expected to speak on behalf of every student. Instead, you will help bring a range of student perspectives into the Board’s work.

Additional paid opportunities may be available during the year, depending on project needs and funding.
Your commitment
You will be expected to:
- Attend approximately five in-person meetings on campus during the academic year
- Complete preparation before meetings, which will gathering feedback and insights from other students through conversations, surveys, focus groups, pop-up activities or other engagement methods. Guidance will be provided on running surveys, focus groups and pop ups with other members of SAB.
- Contribute to agreed activities between meetings
- Take part in discussions and activities with other students
- Engage respectfully and constructively with students and staff
Activities will involve speaking to or gathering views from other students. Any additional project work will be paid separately where appropriate.
All board meetings will take place between 12:15pm-1:45pm on the below dates. Refreshments will be provided at all meetings (not lunch).

*You will receive payment for each board meeting you attend, and for any additional hours that you work in between board meetings. There is not a specific number of hours per week. Maximum number of hours of work in any given week is likely to be 2.
