There is a growing need to move beyond assessing environmental impacts and to incorporate cost-benefit perspectives that capture societal damages and benefits. The Aviation and Environment Research Group within the Department of Natural Sciences seeks to appoint an Intern to support the development of a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) tool. Initially, the intern will learn the key strategies for mitigating the environmental impacts of aviation. Building on this foundation, they will contribute to the development of a CBA tool based on established methodologies. This tool will be used to evaluate the societal costs and benefits of various mitigation strategies, including those involving transformative technologies, and sustainable aviation fuel. This role presents a valuable opportunity for work-based learning and enhance education experience for the intern. The intern will gain hands-on experience by working with researchers in the group and participating in both internal and external project meetings.
Duties may include
- Development of a cost-benefit analysis model (written in Excel/VBA or GUI-driven Python).
- Presentation of results as tables or figures.
Dates: 9th June 2025 (ASAP) to 11th July 2025 (negotiable, but no later than 11th July 2025)
Hours of Work: At least 16 hours (can be negotiated at the start of the internship, but up to a total of 80 hours)
Training of the specialist modelling methodology will be provided (if required).
Students will be expected to develop the following skills and experiences while carrying out this internship
- Research software development, testing, verification and validation, maintenance and documentation
- Data handling, processing, analysis and presentation for research
- Engage with other researchers
