Job Description

Please note, this opportunity is only available to Manchester Met 2024 graduates who will be based in the UK for the duration of this role. You must have graduated from an undergraduate course from Manchester Met in June 2024 to apply. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept applications from current or previous postgraduate students.

Background
This is a unique opportunity for an intern to join a busy finance team, at a very exciting time, as we will have implemented our new Finance System, Oracle. You will join the Business Planning and Reporting Team, work alongside and be supported by a number of qualified accountants and business partners, to reimagine processes and uncover opportunities delivered by this system. The role will be project based but it will be varied and enable the candidate to build an understanding of the day-to-day workings of this area of finance.

Key Responsibilities
You will support the Business Planning and Reporting Team in the post-implementation phase of the new Oracle Finance System. Your work will involve reconciling financial data, testing system-generated reports, and helping document new processes. You’ll contribute to audit preparations and collaborate with colleagues to improve reporting and financial operations.

Key Tasks
The work will largely be ad-hoc and in response to “discovery” work post-implementation.  The tasks could be linked to any of research grants and projects, balance sheet accounts, or the reporting of finances both internal or external.  They are, irrespective of the subject matter, likely to include the following:
  •  Reconciliations between data sets, understanding variances and working with team members to understand reasons for any discrepancies.
  • Testing system reports for robustness ensuring they are representative of the system data.
  • Participating in conversations and drafting/refining process notes and process-maps, to be used across the team to support the use of the new Oracle system.
  • Producing evidence of the efficacy of the move from the old to the new system to support the financial audit.

Details
Dates: Monday 18 August - Friday 7 November 2025
Hours: 35 hours per week full time, except for Bank Holiday Monday (25 August 2025)
Working pattern: Monday to Friday. Working hours are 8:45am-4:30pm or 9:00am-4:45pm with an unpaid 45-minute lunch break
Location:  Bridgewater House / Hybrid

Benefits to the Graduate
In this role, the graduate could expect to improve on the following skills:
  •  Understanding of how a finance department works.
  • Experience using a large Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, Oracle. Essential to almost every role within a finance department.
  • The project work will allow for some autonomy in seeking solutions, both independently and collaboratively, and should improve problem solving abilities.
  • You will be working alongside people of different levels potentially both internal and external to the department.  This will hone abilities to effectively communicate with different audiences.
  • Teamwork will be improved as you take opportunities to learn from and work with people to achieve a common goal.
  • Manipulating and analysing data will form a large part of most tasks and as such the skill will be greatly improved.

Person Specification

This role is only open to those who graduated from a Manchester Met undergraduate course in June 2024 and are not currently studying, nor have previously studied, on a postgraduate course.

The ideal candidate will have the following:

Essential:
  •  Proficient with standard office IT applications, notably Excel, as well as the ability to learn how to access and interrogate in-house systems.
  • Ability to work both independently as well as part of a team, depending on the nature of the task being undertaken.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing to different audiences.
  • Good time management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines or if required manage expectations in a timely manner. More than one task could be allocated at a time, so an ability to prioritise becomes essential.

Desirable:
  • An understanding of Accounting / Finance would be desirable but not essential. A candidate should however, be able to demonstrate an interest in working in finance in the future.
  • Work experience within a finance department would be helpful.
